Using Appreciative Inquiry in Parent-Teen Mediation

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a communication and problem-solving process that attempts to bring all voices to the table in conflict or change situations. With a focus on positives, the process looks for common ground to find solutions and build foundations for better communication.

Manage Conflict and Resolve Problems by Negotiating

Traditionally, conflict has been viewed as a destructive force to be ignored or silenced; today, many are redefining conflict as an opportunity. Once conflict is approached as a cooperative effort, nurses and other healthcare professionals can restructure trust to enhance professional relationships. By understanding the dynamics of negotiation in areas such as leadership, power, and conflict management, healthcare professionals will improve the quality of their professional practice, relationships and their working environment.

2005 Model Standards of Conduct for Mediators

"Mediation is used to resolve a broad range of conflicts within a variety of settings.
These Standards are designed to serve as fundamental ethical guidelines for persons
mediating in all practice contexts. They serve three primary goals: to guide the conduct
of mediators; to inform the mediating parties; and to promote public confidence in
mediation as a process for resolving disputes.

Court-Ordered Mediation: Effective?

Is mediation effective when court ordered, even if the parties don’t believe in potential benefits?  It depends on a number of factors:

  • the SKILL of the mediator
  • the WILLINGNESS of participants to negotiate in good faith
  • the AVAILABILITY OF CREATIVE OPTIONS for resolution.
Mediate, Don’t Litigate?

Mediation is not a magic bullet.  However, it yields voluntary agreement more times than not, when facilitated by a skilled practitioner in an appropriate setting. The hardest part of mediation is getting people to the table, as any mediator or mediation organization will attest. Why the resistance?
